Breed Description

The Rouge is primarily a terminal sire breed of medium size. It has excellent conformation, without excessive bone. Mature rams weigh 95 - 135kg, Ewes 70 - 100kg. As it's name suggests it's head is hornless and reddish pink in colour. It is bare of wool but may have a covering of fine brown or whitish hair.

The breed is strong and deep through the chest with good length in back and loin, but its overall muscling characteristics are the powerhouse of the Rouge. The wool is fine and short stapled and grows into a dense fleece, giving ample protection against the harshest of climates.

The Rouge's main attributes:

  • Prolificacy and extended breeding season for early to late lamb production

  • Lambs are easily born, lively and determined to survive, suckling within minutes of being born

  • Rouge sired lambs reach 19kg at 100 days

  • High meat to bone ratio contributes to the excellent killing out percentage, often in excess of 50%

  • Potential to finishing lambs at higher weights in a low fat class

  • Rouge ewes are very maternal, milky and prolific (averaging 200%)

  • The Rouge is widly used as a producer of quality commercial breeding females

  • Rouge cross females inherit the above traits when retained for breeding purposes
