Chairman’s Word August 2010

Last time I wrote looking towards the coming show season, and now already with the main shows over we look to the coming sales with optimism. Lambs have been a good price and cast ewes exceptional – this should augur well for the breeding stock.

Now as breeders we need to keep up the momentum with quality sheep as more positive feed back and enquiries comes from purchasers of rouge being happy with the way they are performing in different flocks and locations, a reflection in the fact that John Gate has already sold three shearling rams by mid July – these being later born lambs and reared on a commercial system and grown naturally but are showing the ability to thrive and produce a quality carcass.

This leads to the possibility of changing the full registration system for late born lambs to be registered the following year at an increased fee, this will be subject to ratification at the AGM, this year by kind invitation of John and Rachel Gate.

Congratulations to every one who has been showing sheep, winning interbreeds and reserves with individuals, pairs and trios, even those without rosettes as their participation keeps the competitions going and is our best ‘shop window’.

Unfortunately the show flock trophy can only be judged on two royals this year. This means that we will have to decide on another format for the future to award this special prize, all suggestions will be considered, bring them to the AGM! There will be lots to discuss.

The Carlisle sale has an entry of 124 sheep this year which is very pleasing and should draw the buyers don’t forget the dinner on the night before the sale – we are joining the Blue De Maine Sheep Society for a three course meal, £15 payable on the night but please let Sue know by 10th August so the meals can be booked for you.

See you at Carlisle

John
